CREATING A FOCUSED AND RESPECTFUL CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT

Dear Teachers,

The subject above represents one of the major responsibilities of a *good* teacher. Teachers who are not adequately trained in classroom management may find it challenging to maintain a positive and productive learning environment. Below are a few key steps to help manage learners' behavior during lesson periods:

1. *Arrive on Time:* Be punctual to your lessons and inform your learners in advance if there is any change in the venue.

2. *Set Clear Expectations:* Ensure students are aware of classroom rules and the consequences for not adhering to them. As the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 14:8, "For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?" Make the dos and don’ts clear.

3. *Good Communication* : For effective teaching and learning, encourage students to listen attentively while teaching is going on or when a class member is contributing. Avoid allowing chorus answers. Speak audibly and with clarity to ensure that all students can hear and understand.

4. *Maintaining Eye Contact and Effective Non-Verbal Communication* – Using body language, eye contact, and other non-verbal cues to engage with students and manage learners' behavior.

5. *Be Present and Engaged:* Teachers should move around the classroom and avoid distractions such as phone use. Don't always sit down to teach or stay at the same spot.

6. *Adopting Effective Teaching Strategies* – Using tailored teaching methods, such as planned repetition, asking and entertaining questions to keep students engaged and support their learning

7. *Engage Learners:* Incorporate interactive and stimulating activities to maintain student interest and reduce disruptive behavior. Use instructional materials frequently and incorporate practical work.

8. *Providing Access to Equitable Learning Resources* – Ensure that all students have access to the materials and tools needed to succeed in their learning.

9. *Be Flexible (Firm but Friendly):* Be fair in your judgment and maintain a balanced approach to discipline. That is, a balance of authority and approachability. .

10. *Supporting Struggling Learners* – Offering extra help and resources to students who need additional support to succeed.

11. *Proactive Classroom Management* : Monitor students closely and address disruptions early, before they escalate.

12. *Use Positive/Negative Reinforcement* : Acknowledge good behavior to promote a positive learning atmosphere. You can use colored cards (Green – Merit – 2 marks for classwork, Yellow – Warning for disruption, Red – Demerit – kneel down and minus 2 marks).

13. *Rearrange Learners’ Seats* : Destructive learners may need to be seated closer to the teacher for better monitoring.

14. *Mild Punishments: Use mild punishments* such as standing up, closing eyes, or kneeling in front of the classroom (not outside). Please avoid corporal punishment

15. *Seeking Adequate Training –* Continuously improving your skills in class organization and management to ensure a productive learning environment.

16. *Last Resort – Follow-Up* : If a student's behavior continues to disrupt the learning environment, please inform the school head for further support.

Dear Educators, the classroom is a place for interaction, not interruption. Learn to create an enabling environment where all students can thrive and always make your leadership presence count

And remember, *Consistency* is key to maintaining discipline among learners. Let’s work together to provide the best learning experience for our students always.

Thanks.
