MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION

Measurement and evaluation are essential for determining the effectiveness of teaching and learning. This area of education enables educators to assess whether students have successfully acquired the knowledge and skills that have been taught. Evaluation, whether norm-referenced or criterion-referenced, provides valuable feedback on student progress and performance.

For assessment to be effective, it must be continuous—referred to as Continuous Assessment (CA)—and should possess the following key characteristics:

1. Systematic Planning: Assessments should be designed around specific content areas and learning objectives.

2. Standardized: Assessments must align with the expectations and requirements of examination bodies or professional qualifications (PQs).

3. Comprehensive: Assessments should utilize a variety of tools (e.g., assignments, classwork, projects, practical work, tests, and term exams).

4. Cumulative: Assessment should consider and reflect on students' previous performances.

5. Guidance-Oriented: Assessments should serve as a tool for providing constructive feedback to both teachers and learners, guiding future learning and improvement.
