PUNISHMENT AT SCHOOL: AIMS AND THE WRONG WAYS

*PUNISHMENT AT SCHOOL: AIMS AND THE WRONG WAYS*

PUNISHMENT is a price or penalty paid for negative behavior. It is aimed at stopping an undesirable behavior or it fosters discipline among the school children & encourages the development of good behaviors if done effectively. The purpose of punishment includes:
1. To show societal disapproval
2. To serve as deterrent to others
3. It equalizes or pays for misbehavior.
Point number 3 underscores the fact that punishment *MUST NOT* be given out of proportion; which is called *RETRIBUTIVE PUNISHMENT* (RP). Other RP includes:
1. Punishment out of anger/uncontrolled emotions.
2. Punishment as a show of authority
3. Delaying punishment too long after the offense
4. Punishing unjustly
5. Punishment outside behavioral management policy (BMP).
As an educator, you can't rule out punishment in order to lead children in the path of righteousness. However, you MUST do it with the right understanding and within the limit of BMP.

Thanks for being a concerned & caring Coach.
